How a Reiki Session Works

A step-by-step guide to what happens during a Reiki session — from arrival and intention-setting through the hands-on experience to the gentle close.

Before the Session

A Reiki session typically begins with a brief conversation between the practitioner and the recipient. This is an opportunity to discuss what the recipient is hoping to experience — perhaps deeper relaxation, a sense of calm, or simply some quiet time for themselves. No medical history is required, and the practitioner will not ask about diagnoses or conditions. The focus is entirely on the recipient's comfort and intention.

The Setting

Most Reiki sessions take place in a quiet, comfortable room. The recipient lies fully clothed on a padded treatment table, often with soft music playing and the lighting kept low. Some practitioners use a light blanket. The atmosphere is designed to encourage a sense of safety and ease — there is nothing to do, nowhere to be, and nothing to achieve.

The Session Itself

The practitioner begins by taking a moment to centre themselves and set an intention of care and presence. They then move through a series of hand positions, placing their hands lightly on or just above the recipient's body — typically beginning at the head and moving gradually toward the feet. Each position is held for several minutes.

Recipients often report a variety of sensations: warmth or gentle heat, a pleasant tingling, a feeling of heaviness or lightness, or simply a deep sense of relaxation. Some people fall asleep. Others remain quietly aware. Both responses are entirely natural and welcome.

The Close

At the end of the session, the practitioner gently signals the close and gives the recipient a moment to return to full awareness. Many people feel deeply rested, as though they have had a long, peaceful sleep. Some feel a lightness or clarity. It is common to feel thirsty afterwards, and drinking water is encouraged.

After the Session

The effects of a Reiki session can continue to unfold for hours or even days afterwards. Some people notice a gradual shift in their mood, sleep quality, or general sense of ease. These are individual experiences and will vary from person to person. Reiki is not a treatment for any condition, and any changes noticed are understood as the natural result of deep relaxation rather than a medical intervention.
