Distance Reiki Explained
An explanation of distance Reiki — how practitioners work with intention and focused attention to offer a relaxation experience across physical space.
What Is Distance Reiki?
Distance Reiki is a form of the practice in which the practitioner and recipient are not in the same physical location. Rather than placing hands on or near the recipient's body, the practitioner uses focused intention, visualisation, and specific techniques learned during Reiki training to direct their attention toward the recipient wherever they may be.
The Reiki Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen Symbol
In traditional Usui Reiki, distance sessions are facilitated by a symbol called Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, which is introduced at the Second Degree (Reiki II) level of training. This symbol is understood to represent the idea that time and space are not barriers to the flow of compassionate intention. Practitioners use it as a focus for their attention when working at a distance.
How a Distance Session Works
A distance Reiki session is typically arranged in advance, with both practitioner and recipient agreeing on a time. The recipient is invited to find a comfortable, quiet place — lying down or sitting — and to remain there for the duration of the session, which usually lasts between thirty and sixty minutes. The practitioner, in their own space, follows a similar process to an in-person session: centring, setting an intention, and moving through a series of hand positions — often using a surrogate object, a photograph, or simply a clear mental image of the recipient.
Many recipients report experiences during distance sessions that are similar to those in person: warmth, tingling, deep relaxation, or a sense of peaceful presence. These experiences are understood as the natural result of focused, caring attention — not as evidence of any supernatural mechanism.
A Note on Expectations
Distance Reiki is offered as a relaxation experience, not as a remote medical intervention. It is not a substitute for in-person care, and practitioners do not make claims about its ability to affect physical conditions from afar. What it can offer is a structured opportunity for quiet, intentional rest — something many people find genuinely supportive, wherever they happen to be.
